Deathwatch Beetle
These naughty little beetles can be very damaging to oak timber framed buildings, but just as with woodworm, if you get them in your home, they are telling you that you have other issues in your home that need addressing.
The 'special people' love these and will tell you that they need to drill a series of 10mm holes at an angle into the affected timbers and pump a magic cream into these holes which will poison them in their larval stage, then they try to get you to sign up to them returning time and time again to re-fill their drill holes with more magic cream!
However, drilling a series of 10mm holes in the structural frame of the building will only weaken the frame itself, and if that building is Listed, then Listed Building Consent will be required which simply adds more costs in existing and proposed Architect's drawings, Heritage statements, design & access statements before even submitting the application, and because of the impact on the structure you will get a refusal for sure!
The 'special people' won't do these return visits for free and given that these are known to burrow and feed in the timber for up to 12 years, these return visits can end up rather costly!
Down here in Heritage Lane we know all that's really needed is to stop the food source because no Mother is going to leave her babies to die of starvation and this is where we can help; help to save your home and help to save your bank balance!
